Carl Smith, Jr. Scholarship/LEAD Scholars Program
After a drop in diversity of the 2007 incoming class in Ann Arbor, the Alumni Association board of directors established the LEAD Scholars Fund to assure the continued diversity of the student body. In the spring of 2010, the Alumni Association designated the U-M Club of Washington, DC as the first alumni club to offer a LEAD Scholarship to a qualified under-represented student. Named after former UMDC president, the late Carl Smith, Jr., with the inaugural scholarship awarded during Spring 2011, this program provides $10,000 per year to its recipient.
