President’s Message
Dear Fellow Wolverines,
It is my pleasure to serve the greater Washington, DC area community of Michigan alumni as your President. UMDC is one of the largest clubs in the alumni association outside the Midwest, encompassing D.C. and the surrounding counties/cities in Maryland and Virginia. We have a great responsibility not only to foster “a spirit of loyalty and fraternity” among our alumni association members, but also to serve as ambassadors for the University in our nation’s capital and surrounding areas.
Our goal is to provide fulfilling event programming to our alumni in all capacities, whether it be career development and networking, community service, social, educational, or athletic. Consequently, we organize our club by committee, and each committee is charged with planning opportunities for our alumni to connect with other alumni and the University through these activities.
We are also motivated to promote and encourage attendance at the University through our student outreach programs for prospective students, and we have a strong alumni student recruitment program. We offer $65,000 in scholarship assistance to local students, including a need-based scholarship via the Samuel L. Chappell Family UMDC Scholarship and the Public Service Internship Program (PSIP) for University students visiting or living in the Washington area for academic-related work. Because of this, many of our events have dual goals – to provide a fulfilling event while also raising money for our scholarship endowment.
Our club is run entirely by volunteers and its success relies on their hard work. I encourage you to get more involved to help make our club even greater. We are always on the lookout for enthusiastic alums who want to share their love for Michigan and one day become leaders of the club.
