University of Michigan Alumnae Council Announces the “Michigan Woman”

For decades, University of Michigan alumni have heard the phrase “Michigan Man” repeated in diverse, positive scenarios.

The University of Michigan Alumnae Council (UMAC) – an affiliate group of the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan, which represents female alumni, women-aligned, non-binary people, and their supporters – was formed in 1917 to strengthen the university’s impact by helping alumnae connect and succeed after graduation.

UMAC has developed a graphic to represent the “Michigan Woman” and unveiled “her” at their spring meeting on Saturday, May 18, 2024.

The Michigan Woman graphic reflects the diversity of the Michigan Woman – her uniqueness, her stellar character, her perspectives, her ethnicity, and her career path. It illustrates how that combined individualism of each forms the bedrock and strength of the Michigan Woman as a whole.

The graphic was designed with thoughts of the lobby sculpture, created by Pamela Stump (’50 and ’51), at the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan offices. Ms. Stump’s sculpture was purchased and donated by the University of Michigan Alumnae Council.

“We hope that our campus leadership and alumnae will begin elevating the Michigan Woman and ALL she embodies,” says Betty Bishop ’72, UMAC Chair, “on our three campuses, in the workplace, in sports, amongst her family, through engagement in civic and faith organizations and how she represents our stellar University of Michigan throughout the globe.  There is no one quite like the Michigan Woman!”

UMAC membership is free to any alumnae of the three University of Michigan campuses and Michigan Woman supporters.  Simply register online.

Michigan Woman apparel now can be purchased at our online store with a portion of proceeds benefitting UMAC.

The University of Michigan Alumnae Council (UMAC), the association of women graduates of the University of Michigan, is one of several affiliate organizations of the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan. Established in 1917, it is made up of interested individuals and members of seven active alumnae clubs. Members raise money for scholarships to worthy students, promote the University in their communities, encourage outstanding students to attend the University, and promote the interest of women in the University community.
