Fun fact

I am one of the few American scholars to have attended university and lived for several years in both Israel and Arab countries. I have also taught at universities in three different countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Also when I was younger, I hitch-hiked across the Saharan Desert.

U-M Role

I teach courses and research seminars, at both the undergraduate and graduate student level, on Politics and Society in the Middle East and North Africa and on the Arab-Israeli Conflict. One of my areas of specialization is the attitudes and values of ordinary citizens in the MENA region.

Trip Experience

It is a very beautiful and interesting part of France. My studies in North Africa were in French and I have a secondary interest in French politics, including the circumstances of the many French citizens of North African origin.
