UMDC Alumni Student Recruitment (ASR)/”Adopt-a-School” Program

The University of Michigan is built on a strong tradition of academic excellence. Alumni volunteers can give back to the University and share their U-M pride and loyalty by encouraging academically talented students to apply to – and attend – the University.

As an Alumni Student Recruiter (ASR), you provide the one-on-one interaction, personal attention, and encouragement that can make the difference between a student in your community choosing Michigan or another school. Providing your perspective as a U-M graduate is the most important part of the program. Alumni Student Recruitment not only brings back the nostalgia from your college days, but also helps send the future Leaders and Best to U-M.

The Goals of the ASR Program are:

  • To increase the number of highly competitive and qualified students considering U-M at the undergraduate level and to increase the percentage of admitted students who enroll
  • To provide a local information source for inquiring students, applicants, admitted and enrolled students, and their families
  • To provide regional assistance to the U-M admissions staff

As an ASR, there are a number of ways you can volunteer your time, and each is a worthwhile way to give back to the U-M community. Volunteers are encouraged to participate in one or all of these activities:

  • Adopt-A-School Liaison
  • College Fair Alumni Representative
  • Prospective and Admitted Student Reception Host
  • Underrepresented Minority Student Recruitment—Each One, Reach One

These and more can be viewed at https://alumni.umich.edu/volunteer/alumni-student-recruitment/recruitment-activities/

As an ASR, you should be in-the-know about programs, University policy, news and information, and be able to provide feedback to the Alumni Association. To make sure you’re equipped to answer a wide range of questions from prospective students—whether it’s about admissions, college fairs, or Each One/Reach One—we’ve put together a list of helpful resources. These resources are kept up-to-date at https://alumni.umich.edu/volunteer/alumni-student-recruitment/recruiter-resources/

NOTE: ASRs are needed to Adopt-A-School for the 7 DC High Schools, over 30 VA High Schools, and 30 MD High Schools.

If you are interested in the program and/or want additional information, feel free to contact Sam Chappell at slchapp@umich.edu or at 571-218-2937.

Please note: The University requires background checks on all individuals who come in contact with minors involved in University programs, and this includes alumni volunteers in the Alumni Student Recruitment program. After you apply, you’ll be contacted by the University with further instructions. Background checks are provided by the University at no cost to the alum.
