Fun fact

I suppose the most interesting fact about me is my quite varied career. Early on, I worked as an orchestral trumpet player, performing with major orchestras and serving as principal trumpet at two summer music festivals for fifteen years. I later ventured into the field of ethnomusicology and conducted research in West Africa, rural China, and Michigan. As an administrator, I was dean of the college at the University of California-Santa Barbara and senior vice-provost at Michigan.

U-M Role

For 21 years, I served as the University’s senior vice provost for academic affairs & senior counselor to the president. As a musicologist, I taught courses on world music, field and laboratory methods in ethnomusicology, & African music. My main research areas encompass a broad range of inquiries into the musics of Africa, China, and Michigan’s folk/traditional/immigrant musics.

Trip Experience

As a student of culture, I see the Iberian peninsula as a crossroad of diverse cultures. Considering the depth of its ancient civilization dating back to the 6th Century BC and the incursion of influences from Europe and North Africa, the regions of Portugal and Spain hosts shades of richness in its art, architecture, music, language that portrays its rich history. It will be exciting to experience this richness of culture on this trip.
