I’ve had a variety of work experiences in my career: as an academic administrator for nearly 30 years, I learned about the complex inner workings of two major universities; as an ethnomusicologist, I have conducted research in Africa, Asia, and rural Michigan; and as a trumpet performer, I have performed with several major symphony orchestras and served as the principal trumpet at two summer festivals. The coalescence of these experiences and the many people I have encountered contribute to my unique background.
My music background is in ethnomusicology, ethnographic field research, and orchestral trumpet performance. I’ve taken a variety of courses, ranging from Western music history to world music to specialized courses on field and laboratory methods in ethnomusicology.
The Caribbean region represents the nexus between the musics of Africa and European music. The vestiges of both cultures are seen in the many varieties of music that are integral parts of religious ritual and popular culture.
