The towering peaks of the Alps serve as the stunning backdrop for our Swiss and Austrian exploration. As our small group discovers mountain villages and European cities, rides the famed Glacier Express, cruises on glassine lakes, and ascends snowcapped summits, borders disappear and the region’s history – and beauty – enchant one and all.

I spent my junior year abroad in Taiwan, studying Chinese, and, while there, I starred in a Taiwanese soap opera about an American girl from Kentucky going to Taiwan to study agriculture.
I was a Lecturer at the University of Michigan’s Residential College (RC) from 2008 to 2022 where I taught narrative journalism, memoir writing, and other forms of creative non-fiction and fiction. I also served as head of the RC’s First-Year Seminar program, which oversaw the college’s first-year writing requirement, from 2016 until retirement. In 2015, I became a faculty advisor, which allowed me to mentor former and new students. I shared my enthusiasm for birding with students and faculty, leading to unexpected connections.
I’ve wanted to visit this part of the world since reading “Heidi” as a child. This will be the opportunity to learn more about the terrain, plants, animals, and birds of Switzerland, northern Italy, and Austria, as well as the history of the region. I’m also excited about the cheeses, wines, and other foods. Perhaps some fresh goat’s milk, like Heidi and Klara drank regularly! Sharing this with a small group seems the ideal way to experience it.
