A University of Michigan study, led by Max Vanatta, a PhD student in the School for Environment and Sustainability and Michael Craig, an Assistant Professor of Energy Systems at the school, explores the potential of small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) to decarbonize industry. SMRs are miniature versions of conventional nuclear power plants but are smaller in scale and can be produced in larger numbers. The study focuses on industrial heat demand and examines the economic viability of SMRs compared to existing fossil fuels like natural gas.
