In partnership with NOAA and others, researchers at the University of Michigan are forecasting a smaller-than-average harmful algal bloom in Lake Erie this summer. On a scale of 2-4.5, this year’s bloom is expected to measure 3, a significant decrease from last year when it measured off the charts at 6.8. Don Scavia, Don Scavia, U-M aquatic ecologist and a forecast team member, explores the reasons for the smaller bloom, not all of which are positive.
