The U-M Club of Charlotte is led by a volunteer board of directors and officers. Board meetings are held on a regular basis.

U-M Club of Charlotte Board

Matt Nolan – President

Matt grew up in Muskegon, MI and is a first-generation Wolverine (B.A. Political Science & History ’03, Law ’06).  His first Michigan “involvement” was founding a Euchre League on campus as a freshman.  Matt was Student Body President at Michigan from 2001-02, and led the effort which resulted in Michigan’s first Fall Break in the fall of 2002.  While at Michigan Law, he was President of the Federalist Society chapter, Executive Editor of the Res Gestae, sang bass with the Headnotes a capella group, and was the commissioner of the Michigan Law Bowling League.  In his professional life Matt is an in-house corporate attorney for Honeywell, and he has served on the board of the Bay City, Shanghai and Chicago chapter boards prior to moving to Charlotte at the end of 2021.  Matt is also on the board of Carolina Crown, the Global Board of the Association of Corporate Counsel, and fundraises for Blood Cancer United.

David Schmitz – Vice President, Chief Game Watch Officer & Chief Scholarship Officer

David grew up in the Detroit area and graduated from U-M with an Engineering degree in 1988. He was an Evans Scholar for his four years as a Michigan undergraduate. David has lived in Charlotte, NC, since 2004.  His wife, Debbie, is also a Michigan graduate and his son, Stephen, is of course a Michigan fan.  He has been actively involved with the Charlotte UM Club Board since 2022, and currently liaises with our UM Watch Party partner, Tremont, and serves as the Board’s Vice President.

Peter Baldwin – Treasurer, Chief Financial Officer

Peter is a native of East Grand Rapids, MI and a fifth-generation Wolverine (B.A. History ’95, MBA ’02). Before returning to Ann Arbor for his MBA, he spent five years supporting independent media development in Eastern Europe & the former Soviet Union. At the business school, he co-founded the Emerging Markets Club, served as opinions page editor of the Monroe Street Journal, and was elected to the Michigan Student Assembly, where he led efforts to persuade the business school to join in adopting Michigan’s first Fall Break. Peter owns and operates three companies providing advisory, tax and accounting/bookkeeping services to acquisitive small and medium enterprises, primarily in the marketing & advertising sector. Since 2010, Peter has served on the board of the Baldwin Foundation, and he has served previously as treasurer for several volunteer organizations.  After prior post-MBA stops took him to New York, London, Los Angeles and back to Ann Arbor, Peter and his family moved to the Lake Norman area in 2020.

Brandon Garzez – Secretary, Chief Programming Officer

Brandon graduated from the College of Engineering in 2021 with a BSE in Computer Science, and he is originally from the Pittsburgh, PA area. After graduating, Brandon moved to Charlotte in 2022 and has started his career as a software engineer at Wells Fargo. Outside of work, he enjoys cooking, playing chess, and consuming anything and everything related to Michigan Football. Brandon is best known for leading the singing of “The Victors” after Michigan touchdowns at the official game watch parties every fall Saturday (unless he is representing the Queen City on-location, that is!), and he loves to meet new alumni in the Charlotte area.

Chris Hudson – Board Member, Chief Community Service Officer & Chief Student Engagement Officer

Chris has been an instrumental leader, coordinating our first successful community service project post-Covid, at the Habitat For Humanity ReStore.

Nicole Latham – Board Member, Chief Welcoming Officer

Nicole grew up in southeast Michigan and graduated from U-M with a mechanical engineering degree in 2017. She was on the cheerleading team for four years as an undergraduate student and captained the team her junior and senior years. After graduating, Nicole spent 7 years in St. Louis, MO working at the Anheuser-Busch brewery and moved to Charlotte in 2025 with her husband Jake, who is also a U-M graduate. She is currently pursuing her MBA and is excited to meet more alumni in the Charlotte area.
