My research focuses on the relationship between poverty and the environment in low-income countries. Degraded environmental conditions can push people into poverty. Alternatively, sustainable access to environmental goods and services can be an important pathway to springboarding people out of poverty. I’m trained as an applied economist, but I work on problems that require deeply interdisciplinary science. My current research focuses on understanding the impacts and adaptations associated with both sudden and slow-onset climate shocks. My research team is collecting data in Bangladesh and in the Lake Victoria Basin. We work with policymakers and program implementers to understand what supports adaptation to climate change in these settings.
I worked in Indonesia in the early 2000s on two major research projects with very high policy relevance to human well-being and climate change mitigation. This region has incredibly rich biodiversity, but is also under tremendous pressure due to economic growth and development. I’m excited to see what has changed over the past 25 years and gain a better understanding of how sustainability is integrated into modern life in the region.
