I am the assistant director for astronomy at the Bentley Historical Library’s Judy and Stanley Frankel Detroit Observatory, one of the oldest original observatories in the United States. I develop and maintain all astronomy programs and activities at the observatory. I also oversee the use and demonstration of our historic telescopes to teach the history of the universe and the University.
The sun is one of the most dynamic celestial objects in our solar system and, in many ways, changes on a human timescale. I have shown the sun (safely) to thousands of people through a telescope, highlighting incredible sunspots and astonishing prominences, and teaching about their connections to the beautiful aurora that appear in the Earth’s atmosphere. Seeing the northern lights in Iceland would give me the chance to share that story with attendees in an entirely unique setting.
