My name is Kai Myran and I am from Landenberg, Pennsylvania. I will be attending the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan with the intention of attaining a degree in Biomedical Engineering. I currently attend Avon Grove High School where I participate in several activities, such as String Orchestra and Yearbook Club, and I hope to continue to pursue these interests in college. I am incredibly excited to become immersed in the Wolverine spirit as I spend the next four years developing the skills I need to become an engineer, which will hopefully involve the undergraduate research opportunities that the university is known for. I am honored to be a recipient of this scholarship, and I would like to thank the University of Michigan Alumni Club of Philadelphia for providing me with the support I needed to attend my dream school. My name is Fleur de Jong, and I live in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania where I attend Harriton High School. I will be attending the University of Michigan in the fall as a Psychology major with the hope of attending law school after graduation and entering into family law. I will be apart of the Novice Women’s Rowing team next year as a coxswain. I have been a rower all throughout high school and loved the bonds and family that I created from it. In addition, I am very involved in community service as a member of my school’s MiniThon and Service League. I also volunteer at a non-profit, Great Expectations Together, promoting inclusion for children and adults with disabilities. Next year, at the U-M, I hope to continue volunteering with the Rowing team and individually at the Mott’s Children’s Hospital. I love spending time with friends, attending sporting events, and going on adventures. I am excited for the games in the Big House and my own races where I will represent the maize and blue. I cannot wait to make Ann Arbor my home and I am extremely grateful to the University of Michigan Alumni Club of Philadelphia for granting me this scholarship and opportunity. Go Blue! | |

My name is Brendan Warren and I will be attending the University Of Michigan College Of Engineering in the fall of 2016. Since I first heard about all of the wonderful opportunities that Michigan offers, I knew that it was the place for me. I look forward to the chance to participate in different research opportunities through UROP and work on making a difference in the community around me. Throughout my 4 years of High School at Central Bucks West, sports have been a big part of my high school experience both as a participant and a spectator. I look forward continuing this at Michigan by attending football games at the Big House and cheering on the Wolverines. I would like to thank the University Of Michigan Alumni Club Of Philadelphia for this scholarship and all of the incredible opportunities that come with it.
Update: My freshman year at Michigan was everything that I could have hoped for. I met so many great people and was able to get involved very quickly. Within the first month of school, I had the opportunity to work for the Men’s Hockey team as an equipment manager. Later in the fall, I joined the club running team and was able to meet a lot of friends and compete across the country. These people became some of my closest friends. This past March we raised over $20,000 for the special Olympics in an event called Race Across Michigan. In the second semester, I was able to get involved with a professor’s research. This was an incredible opportunity and allowed me to meet a lot of people that I could go to for advice. |

My name is Skylar Kallick, and I am a resident of Radnor, PA. I attend Radnor High School, and will be attending the University of Michigan as a Neuroscience major with the hope of eventually being able to conduct research to find treatments for different brain disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease. I will be a part of the Women’s Rowing team at Michigan as a coxswain. I have been on my high school’s rowing team for four years and have loved every minute of it. While at the University of Michigan, I hope to be a part of various research opportunities, and I look forward to continuing my volunteer work on campus, as well as in the community. I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, trying new foods, and traveling. I am so excited to make Ann Arbor my home for the next four years, and I am so grateful to the University of Michigan Alumni Club of Philadelphia for awarding me this scholarship. Go Blue!
Update: My first semester has been absolutely wonderful! Ann Arbor is such a beautiful city, and I truly love this university. The winter has been extremely mild so far, which has been quite nice. I have been involved with the women’s rowing team since the start of the school year, and I also joined a sorority, Gamma Phi Beta, in October. Having the structure of a Division I team and the social aspect of Greek life has truly given me the best of both worlds. Words cannot express how much I love this school and all of the people that I have met in my first semester here. One thing that I would let future students know about is “the Michigan difference.” I kept hearing this phrase during my first few months in Ann Arbor, and I wasn’t really sure what it meant. I now realize that the Michigan difference is different for every student. The Michigan difference is waking up to get to your 8am on time, grabbing a bite to eat before heading to the UGLi to work on a paper, catching up with friends on the Diag, supporting the basketball team at one of their games, and still managing to ace your calculus exam. Being given the opportunity to experience so much all on one campus is the Michigan difference, and I am so excited to be a part of it. |

My name is Ron Marine and I am originally from Michigan, but I have lived outside of Philadelphia since 2004. I am a 2014 graduate of Malvern Preparatory School and will major in Political Science/Business at the University of Michigan. Additionally, I will be playing rugby and I hope to get involved in student government, as well as a fraternity. Service was something that was intensely encouraged at my high school and I hope to continue being a part of service projects in the Ann Arbor/Detroit area and beyond. I love to travel and look forward to taking advantage of study abroad opportunities at the University of Michigan. I have been an avid Michigan sports fan for as long as I can remember and I am extremely excited to attend many football, basketball, and hockey games over the next four years. Go Blue! | |

My name is Maggie Hayes and I am from Harleysville, PA. I am currently a freshmen majoring in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan. During my first year here, I was a member of the Women in Science and Engineering Residence Program, and am returning as a Peer Mentor for the program next year. I am also a member of the electrical division of the Michigan Hybrid Racing Team. I am continuing my passion for music by playing the violin in the Campus Philharmonic Orchestra. As an avid Wolverine football fan I also have enjoyed the home games at the Big House. This summer, I am studying abroad at the Technische Universität in Berlin, and I hope to continue to develop my German language skills when I return next year. | |

Ever since I set eyes on the mighty University of Michigan flag, I have been compelled to attend such a school. After a few years, I began to learn about the high academic performance at this school as well as its prestigious aerospace program. As a child, I always knew I wanted to work with any machine that flies. My dad had been my inspiration as he opened my eyes to the wonders of flight. Thus, my love of aerospace and my passion for the University of Michigan had combined. Throughout high school, I dreamt of being able to attend Michigan as I participated in many activities such as student council, theater, National Honor Society, and two community service organizations. My desire to become a wolverine increased with every passing day as I learned more about the vast opportunities available at the university. After my visit to the campus, I made Michigan my top choice. After receiving my financial package in April, I was ready to make the commitment and enroll in the 2012-2013 school year. In the end, I cannot thank the University of Michigan Alumni Club of Philadelphia enough for their graciousness in offering this scholarship.
Update: I am very excited to be coming back to U-M for my masters in aerospace engineering (the one year fast-track program). I have been interning at Lockheed Martin in Palmdale, CA (the Skunk Works) last summer and I will be doing so again this summer. My Michigan experience has been nothing short of amazing which is why I am so excited to stay one more year in my program for aerospace. The scholarship had a pivotal role in allowing me to attend Michigan and stay for my sophomore year! It was a tough transition from far away, especially from my family since I am the first in my family to attend college. Every struggle was worth it and I wouldn’t take it back for anything. |

My Name is Neil Patel and I am a sophomore at the University of Michigan. I am from Bucks County, Pennsylvania-born and raised! I am majoring in Neuroscience (Pre-Med) and also minoring in Spanish language at the University. Currently, I am a student government representative for the school of Literature Sciences and the Arts and part of the Michigan Research Community (living/learning community), where I will be returning next year as a Peer Mentor for first year students. I am involved in undergraduate research at the university in a biomedical engineering lab, Nanoscale Neurology, where I am working on creating biodegradable fiber scaffolds for nerve regeneration. I am also a brother of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity on Michigan’s campus. In the future I hope to attend medical school and become an orthopedic surgeon and help impoverished Spanish-speaking countries establish better medical facilities for their citizens. | |

My name is Hannah Reses, and I am from Haddonfield, New Jersey. I graduated high school in 2010 and have attended the University of Michigan for two years. I am studying ecology and evolutionary biology with a minor in environmental science. I plan to attend graduate school and eventually have a career as a biologist. I would love to work for the EPA or for a non-profit agency. At school I work in a research lab studying the effects of invasive cattails on native wetlands community composition. Last summer I went to Ecuador for a few weeks carrying out environmental volunteer work and community outreach projects. I also had an internship at the Wetlands Institute of Stone Harbor where I worked to protect diamondback terrapins and carried out an independent research project. This summer, I am returning to the institute as a research assistant.
In my free time I enjoy being with my friends and family. I like to watch movies, eat good food, exercise, shop, play with my dog, and go to the beach. I have loved my first two years in Ann Arbor and I can’t wait for the next two. Go blue! |
