Fun fact

I grew up in Khartoum and had visited Egypt a few times as a child. But, I was too young then to really appreciate the history and culture. I have traveled extensively as an adult, but have not been back to Egypt since my childhood. I am looking forward to this trip.

U-M Role

I have been a member of the faculty at the Ross School of Business since 1980 — a long time! I have taught two MBA elective courses for several years now: Strategies for Growth (a course about how large companies grow even bigger and create shareholder value), and Business in Society (a course about the appropriate roles for business, government and civil society in addressing large problems that society faces). For the first 25 years of my professional career, my research was focused on strategies for growth, competitive advantage, global competition and emerging economies. For the last 20 years my research has focused on how society can strike the appropriate balance between private profits and public welfare in tackling major societal challenges such as poverty and climate change.
