In an effort to explain aging, in 1957, evolutionary biologist George Williams proposed that genetic mutations that contribute to aging could be favored by natural selection. Now known as the antagonistic pleiotropy theory of aging, Williams’s idea is still the most commonly used explanation behind aging. A University of Michigan-led study finds strong support in cementing this idea.
