Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Music and Director of University Bands Emeritus

U-M Role

As Director of Bands from 2001-2023, I had administrative oversight across the entire university band program. A team of four faculty members and 500+ students participating in 11 different band ensembles were in my charge. I also conducted the Symphony Band which made 10 commercial CD’s during my tenure and played important concerts in Carnegie Hall and Walt Disney Concert Hall. A historic month long trip to China took place in 2011. In addition, I also taught masters and doctoral courses for students who are now leading band programs at major universities including four Big Ten universities.

Trip Experience

The cultural and political history of these locations have long been part of my professional life as well as my hobbies. The scenery is STUNNING and the mixture of urban life in Munich compared to the small town atmosphere of Schladming with Salzburg in between is fascinating.
