I ran Cross Country and Track at the University of California Irvine (NCAA D1) where I was awarded the Presidential Scholar-Athlete award. I earned my spot on the varsity team as a walk-on freshman, despite having been offered scholarships across the U.S. I graduated in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Cultural Anthropology and was the first person to earn the Ethnomusicology specialization.
I have been working at U-M for 22 years in varied roles including as an instructor (Education, Women Studies, Liberal Arts, at Huron Valley Women’s Correctional Facility) and administrator. In my current role at CEW+, we provide providing academic, financial, and professional support to help individuals in the U-M community of all genders to reach their personal potential. We provide free education and career counseling to faculty, staff, students, and community members and scholarships, fellowships, and emergency funds to current students. I earned my Ph.D. from U-M in Education in 2006 by researching how technology can be utilized in classrooms to maximize student learning, with a specific focus on how children’s software games reinforce specific beliefs and attitudes in boys and girls.
I am a National Park fanatic, having visited over 40 different parks and earning over 25 Junior Ranger badges. I love learning about the history of different areas including the culture, geology, folklore, wildlife, and significance. I look forward to learning alongside those on the Great Trains and Grand Canyons trip to explore and uncover new knowledge. I have been to many of the locations that are included in this trip, with my favorite being Montezuma’s Castle (a hidden gem among the parks!).
