Director, U-M Water Center Professor, School for Environment and Sustainability

U-M Role

I teach Water Policy and Politics, Sustainable and Fossil Energy, Great Lakes Policy and Management, and Sustainability Leadership Development. After a long career in the nonprofit advocacy sector — culminating in the role of Great Lakes regional executive director at the National Wildlife Federation — I joined U-M as a professor of practice and engagement at the School for Environment and Sustainability in 2023. In 2025, I became director of the University of Michigan Water Center. My research and interests focus on improving water policy, assisting coastal communities in dealing with the water-related impacts of climate change, and connecting nonacademics with the vast array of water-related research and education at U-M. My particular expertise is in policies and programs impacting the Great Lakes, and I also have significant experience in energy policy and environmental leadership.

What Excites You About the Trip?

I am an avid hiker, kayaker, and outdoorsperson in general, with a particular fondness for northern ecosystems. I’ve had the privilege of traveling to Alaska twice before (but never to SE Alaska), as well as to Svalbard and many other Arctic/northern destinations. The combination of scenery, wildlife, and opportunities to explore spectacular areas while learning about the ecosystems and communities seems unique and exciting. Since this is not a research trip, I am interested in examining the impacts of our changing weather patterns on this beautiful and vulnerable area.
