I teach forest ecology and statistics/statistical modeling, training students to understand forest systems and to analyze ecological data to predict ecosystem services. My research examines how climate change, invasive species, and fragmentation interact to affect forest plant communities and their functioning.
I am excited about the variety of impressive ecosystems in Alaska. Alaska’s natural ecosystems range from glaciated mountain landscapes to vast boreal forests shaped by cold temperatures, permafrost, and frequent wildfires. Along the southern coast, a milder, wetter climate supports temperate rainforests with towering conifers, dense mossy understories, and high biomass. Both fauna and flora are at their wildest in Alaska.
