From 2007 until my retirement in 2022, I taught narrative journalism, memoir writing, journalism, and creative nonfiction. I headed the Residential College’s First-Year Seminar Program, which oversaw the first-year writing requirement. I was also a student advisor.
In November 2025, I spent two weeks in Kenya on a birding and wildlife safari. It was my first time in Africa, and it felt far more meaningful and important than I had expected. Being in Africa gave me a broader context for how to view the world and think about what people in the U.S. take for granted. I look forward to seeing another part of Africa and getting a glimpse of the region’s cultures and people. And, of course, I’ll never tire of seeing the birds and wildlife of Africa. Getting the chance to do this with a group of similarly excited people will be great fun.
