Where in the World Is Blue? – Summer 2023

U-M alums share their travel photos.

As you travel around the world or around the block, show us your Michigan pride! Don your Maize and Blue or Block M and snap a photo. Then email it to [email protected] or share it on social media with #WhereInTheWorldIsBlue. Include the graduate years for all alumni appearing in the photo and a description of the location. Due to the high volume of submissions, we cannot guarantee your photo will appear in the magazine; however, all submitted photos appear on the Michigan Alum website. We publish only those photos submitted by Alumni Association members. By submitting your photo, you agree that the Alumni Association may also use it in its marketing and communication materials.

The Dyer family celebrated the 80th birthday of Dick Dyer, ’64, MA’68 (front row, middle) at Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. Patrick Fetterman, ’86, took the U-M colors on a tour of Edinburgh, Scotland, during a recent trip.

Irv Freeman, ’79, represented the University of North Texas (UNT) at the inauguration of U-M President Santa J. Ono in March. Freeman previously represented UNT at the inauguration of President Emerita Mary Sue Coleman in 2003.

Daughter-and-father duo Brooke, ’09, and Richard A. Goodman, MD’75, MDRES’78, took a 14-day polar expedition to South Georgia Island and Antarctica in March. Though she was unable to join the two on this trip, they also sent love and pride to Deborah Kowal, ’73, for being a wonderful mother and wife.

The clear blue water of Oregon’s Crater Lake National Park was the perfect backdrop for Matthew Gross, ’06, to express his Maize and Blue pride.

Neither the rock nor the hard place could keep the U-M spirit Meredith Holtz, ’91, stuck in one place as she explored Joshua Tree National Park in California.

The family of Edward Kartashevsky, ’02, spent last summer at Londolozi Game Reserve in South Africa.

Tristan Kladzyk, ’04, visited the famous Franklin Canyon Park in Los Angeles on a recent trip. The site has appeared in many film and TV show productions, including “American Horror Story: 1984.”

With the Matterhorn looming large in the background, Mary Ellen Lemire, ’91, visited her nephew, Patrick McGuire, PhD’03, and his wife, Almut Mecke, MS’00, PhD’04, in Zermatt, Switzerland.

Doris Rubenstein, ’71, wasn't the only one sporting Michigan regalia while cruising aboard the Eurodam ship, but she made sure that our university was well represented when transiting the Panama Canal.

Bradley, ’97 and Lisa Paskievitch, ’97, MSW’99, visited Iceland with family.

During the Alumni Association’s Fiesta Bowl pep rally in Scottsdale, Arizona, this December, Michigan Marching Band alumna Portia Jackson, ’04, took an opportunity to get back in the piccolo groove.

Father-and-son duo Rick, ’93, and Brendan Jackson, ’20, took their Christmas vacation to the Dominican Republic, where they participated in a day trip to assist locals with their coffee sustainability program.

Maize and Blue siblings Jeff Stanley, ’89, and Sarah Stanley Russo, ’91, took in the sights of Pompeii, Italy, during a recent trip.

A “bucket list” item got checked off when Dale, MS’74, and Debra Sands, got to enjoy their pandemic-delayed visit to Machu Picchu, Peru.

On a recent trip, Marc Wolfson, ’71, took one more photo before departing from Hong Kong. The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge consists of 34 miles of three cable-stayed bridges, an undersea tunnel, and four artificial islands.

Thomas, ’82, and Paula Wuori, traveled to New Zealand with a group of other alumni.

Marshall L. Smith, ’62, MSW’63, sent this photo of his son, Aric Smith, DDS’92, MSE’02, and granddaughter, Alanna Fogle Smith, ’23, on their recent trip to England.

Sharonda Ayers, ’00, represented the University of Michigan at the Library of Celsus, located in the ancient city of Ephesus in western Turkey.
