Oh, the Places U-M Grads Go!

Read time: 2 minutes

With commencement around the corner, don’t panic…plan. Last year’s graduates headed to all kinds of exciting places and so will you.

One year ago, seniors had to pick up their graduation tickets here at the Alumni Center –so we put up a huge U.S. map and asked students to push a pin into their next destination. Not surprisingly, urban centers both near and far were populated with pins — New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and D.C. But so were Seattle (home of Amazon and Microsoft), and Minneapolis (Target’s headquarters).

The College of Engineering, the Career Center, and the Ross School of Business, however, gathered more sophisticated statistics than our modest map. Their data revealed which companies hired U-M graduates from the class of 2014-15.

In the College of Engineering, the top five employers included General Motors, Ford Motor Company, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon. In the Ross School of Business graduates headed to JPMorgan Chase & Co., Citi, Ernst & Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Boston Consulting Group. Statistics also showed that U-M grads are well represented at many reputable and popular Fortune 500 companies.

Data collected by LSA concerning their graduates was even more diverse. Top fields included everything from finance to working in the nonprofit world, with careers in marketing, advertising, healthcare, and education (among many others), sprinkled in between.

Whether you are headed abroad or staying close to home, planning on pursuing an internship, graduate school, a gap year, or that first real job, keep your eye out for your fellow alumni. Wherever you go, they will be among your biggest supporters. After all, U-M alumni really are the ultimate global network. So good luck and Go Blue!
