In an effort to improve coordinated community efforts, The Michigan System for Opioid Overdose Surveillance was created by University of Michigan researchers in 2016 and is now accessible to public health and safety officers in near-real time. The opioid epidemic has continued to be a major cause for concern since the early 2000s. Before this report, opioid overdose reports were generally provided by the CDC, which meant the information provided was at least a year old.
