While the threat of COVID-19 globally has greatly diminished, people with compromised immune systems or who are over 65 are still at risk. An adjuvant is a substance added to some vaccines to trigger a stronger immune response, boosting their effectiveness and trying to overcome barriers while trying to balance safety.
