Welcome to the U-M Club of Houston!
The U-M Club of Houston exists to foster communication among the University of Michigan, the 4,200+ Houston-area alumni, and other local supporters of the University. In order to create opportunities for alumni to meet each other and benefit from this incredibly rich and diversified group, the club hosts a variety of events and activities. These typically include cultural, recreational, and networking events, and watch parties for Wolverine sports teams, as well as activities related to student recruitment and community service.
During the 2020-2021 academic year, we suspended in-person events per the direction of U-M and the Alumni Association, and shifted our efforts to offer our local alumni a variety of virtual events and activities. As the 2021-2022 academic year comes to an end, the club is now able to offer a number of in-person events in addition to virtual activities. All in-person events will comply with federal, state, local, and individual business (such as event venues) COVID-19 safety guidelines as well as Alumni Association guidances. Please read the information and guidelines included in each event/activity announcement. Current programming information will be posted on our club website’s home page Events tab, on our social media, and in our weekly email newsletter. We encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities to meet new friends, with love for U-M as a common denominator.
Here is a taste of what we have in store for you:
Programming –The club attempts to plan an overall program of events and activities that appeal to alumni of all ages, interests, and backgrounds. If you are interested in doing something with other alumni, whether it is playing Euchre or kickball, attending a Houston Symphony concert, taking your kids to the zoo, enjoying a networking session with other professionals in your career field, or something else entirely, let us know and we will try to make it happen!
Student Relations/Scholarships – You may be surprised to learn that during the 2020-2021 academic year, approximately 200 students from the Houston area attended classes as part of U-M undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs; as of August 2021, 44 local students have matriculated as first-year undergraduates for the Fall 2021 semester (members of the Class of 2025). The club hosts two events each year to bring alumni together with outstanding local high school seniors and their families in a casual setting, so alumni can give students a first-hand account of the Michigan experience: the Admitted Student Reception in early April, and the Student Send-Off in August. For more information about student-related activities during the current academic year, see our club website’s Scholarships and Upcoming Events tabs. In addition, alumni can participate in the Alumni Association’s Alumni Student Recruitment program.
Club Leadership – Are you interested in getting involved as a volunteer club leader? A great first step is to attend our club activities, introduce yourself to our club leaders, and offer your assistance at future events. You can also email us at email@example.com to get more information.
Club Membership – If you are a U-M graduate but not part of the Alumni Association, please consider joining! As an AAUM member, you are automatically a member of the local Houston club, and AAUM members often enjoy reduced admission fees to club-organized ticketed events. Plus, you can take advantage of all the other benefits of AAUM membership, such as the Michigan Alumnus magazine, alumni career services, money-saving discounts, and other programs and services designed to keep you connected to the powerful Michigan network, with over 480,000 members worldwide! In addition, AAUM membership dues directly fund our U-M Club of Houston. So, please join today.
Our club is continually looking to expand its offerings, and we are interested in your suggestions. Contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any ideas that you believe would benefit our club, and therefore our Houston-area alumni overall. We appreciate your continued support and look forward to seeing you at future events!
