There are plenty of opportunities for alumni to participate in student recruiting. To get involved with any of the following programs, please contact the Student Recruitment Chair, Reilley Jones.
Adopt-A-School. Alumni volunteers establish a liaison role with up to three high schools in their area to act as a “recruiter” for all prospective and admitted students. In general, alumni act as a local U-M resource for high school counselors, students and parents. Specifically, alumni deliver an “M Go Blue” packet to the school, make congratulatory calls to admitted students and represent the U-M at their adopted high school’s graduation ceremony or award ceremony for seniors. Volunteers receive monthly lists of admitted students for their adopted schools beginning in January. The personal attention offered by the alumni to the students is a powerful and persuasive tool that enhances the overall recruitment effectiveness for the University. Interested alumni should check out the AAUM’s Alumni Student Recruitment Program.
College Fairs. We are always looking for alumni to help out at local college fairs. At these events, several universities have tables set up and high school students and their parents go from table to table to talk to university representatives and alumni. Alumni volunteers are responsible for handing out U-M brochures and answering questions from parents and students in a one-on-one environment.
New Student Q&A Session. Every spring, we host a Q&A session for prospective new U-M students from Colorado. The alumni club board presents a slideshow and then we field questions from parents and students. It is extremely beneficial to have younger alumni at this event because those are the folks that can best answer questions about university housing, campus life, and various academic programs.
Student Send-Off Picnic. Every August we host a picnic for Colorado’s U-M students and their families. This is a great opportunity for the incoming freshmen to meet other Coloradoans that are also heading out to U-M in the fall. We grill up hot dogs, burgers and brats and provide plenty of time for schmoozing. Alumni are encouraged to attend this annual picnic.
