A degree from the University of Michigan is a badge of honor that graduates will carry with them for the rest of their lives, said Mary Kay Haben, MBA’79, at Winter Commencement.

Haben, chair of the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors, was one of several speakers at the ceremony held at Crisler Center on Dec. 15.

“No matter where you go, you will never be far from the University of Michigan. Because you’re not just leaving here with a degree — you’re joining a community. You are now part of one of the most powerful and respected alumni networks in the world,” she said.

About 1,000 students participated in Winter Commencement. The University Record reported that 4,319 students from the terms ending in August and December were eligible to participate in the ceremony.

Commencement speaker Rebecca Blumenstein, ’97, who was presented with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, told the graduates to become someone who solves problems, not someone who just complains about them.

“If you can find a way to move forward, you’ll find that others will come with you,” Blumenstein, who serves as president of editorial at NBC News, said.

Also receiving honorary degrees were John D. Evans, ’66, Henry Louis Gates Jr., and Margaret H. Hamilton.
