I am excited to be taking a group of University of Michigan Flint students to Cuba in 2025. The trip, Revolution and Resilience, will focus on Cuban history, culture, and an immersive experience into the lives of Cubans today.
As I linguist, my interests mainly focus on phonetics and phonology, yet I also specialize in dialects and Creole languages. I currently use my linguistic and language skills working at the University of Michigan-Flint teaching developmental reading and writing along with English as a second language in the university’s Bridge Program for international students.
Outside of the incredible natural beauty we will encounter daily, as a linguist (who speaks both Spanish and Dutch), what especially excites me is the visit to Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao where Papiamento is spoken. Papiamento is a creole language that is primarily a mix of Spanish/Portuguese and Dutch. I studied Papiamento during my time as an exchange student in the Netherlands, and I am excited to share some of my knowledge with the Alumni travelers.
