Great apes, human’s closest living relatives, are knocking on the door of extinction. Due to human treatment of the great ape, five of the seven recognizable species of great ape have been listed as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. University of Michigan researchers John Mitani and Andrew Marshall suggest that new conservation methods need to be manifested as traditional methods are no longer adequate.
