JULIO FRENK, MPH’81, MA’82, PhD’83, HLLD’16, comes from a long line of physicians, including his Jewish grandfather, who fled from Germany to Mexico in the 1930s. His career has been steeped in health policy. In 1987, Frenk was the founding director-general of the National Institute of Public Health in Mexico. In 1998, he became the executive director of evidence and information for policy at the World Health Organization, then served as Mexico’s minister of health from 2000 to 2006. Frenk, the dean of Harvard’s School of Public Health in 2009, became the first Hispanic to serve as the president of the University of Miami in 2015.
