I knew from a young age that I wanted to live overseas; I love the tv show “Survivor”; and I enjoy playing Euchre to win!
I am the director of the Weiser Diplomacy Center at the Ford School of Public Policy and professor of practice of international diplomacy at the Ford School. I am also a professor from practice at Michigan Law. At the Ford School, I teach “Diplomacy and Statecraft in An Age of Globalization” and “Africa in Context: Diplomacy, Democracy, and Development.” At Michigan Law School, I teach “Law and Diplomacy: African Nations and the International Criminal Court (ICC).” My interests center around the different types of statecraft that make up diplomacy and when to use them to accomplish the goals and foreign policies of a country; mediation efforts to end wars and conflicts; international affairs, foreign policy, and public international law. I try to discover — and help political actors listen to and focus on — the people whose voices are often left out of the conversation, yet could often provide the best solutions if heard.
I love Africa and have spent most of my professional life on the African continent. Kenya was my first overseas diplomatic posting and a key linchpin in conservation efforts, peacemaking, economic development, climate change, and innovation. I served two tours in Kenya and is the country I intend to live in when I retire!
