An advocate for women in the judiciary, Kennedy practiced law for 18 years before becoming the first woman on the federal district bench, serving in Detroit, and one of the first women to clerk at the U.S. Court of Appeals for D.C. Three presidents shortlisted her for the U.S. Supreme Court.
