Where in the World Is Blue? – Spring 2023

U-M alums share their travel photos.

As you start to travel again, whether around the world or around the block, show us your Michigan pride! Don your Maize and Blue or Block M and snap a photo. Then email it to [email protected] or share it on social media with #WhereInTheWorldIsBlue. Include the graduate years for all alumni appearing in the photo and a description of the location. Due to the high volume of submissions, we cannot guarantee your photo will appear in the magazine; however, all submitted photos appear on the Michigan Alum website. We publish only those photos submitted by Alumni Association members. By submitting your photo, you agree that the Alumni Association may also use it in its marketing and communication materials.

Paul Carder, ’62, and his wife, Jacqueline MacNeil, took a tour of Europe over the summer, including a photo op at the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria.

Hamilton Chang, ’89, and others supported Wolverine football while also enjoying a day of baseball at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

Over the summer, John Cho, ’89 (right), and his family took the Wolverine spirit to Liverpool, England.

Following a period of pandemic disruptions, William L. Diefenbach, ’72 (front row, second from right), joined his fraternity brothers from the Alpha Gamma chapter of Theta Chi for a homecoming dinner reunion in Ann Arbor.

A “Michigan Man” celebrates in the heart of Buckeye country after the 2022 U-M vs. OSU football game. John W. Dietrich, ’78, MD’83, is an orthopedic hand surgeon practicing in Akron, Ohio. In John’s hand is the Michigan lanyard he has worn for the last 20-plus years.

Doug Smith, ’86, MSE’89, visited Singapore’s famous Satay Street at the La Pau Sat hawker market.

Bob Gibbs, MLARCH’84, celebrates the Japanese publishing of his book, “Town Center” (2021), with his co-author, Tatsuya Yagi. The book, a best-seller in Japan, introduces American town planning best practices to Japanese cities and real estate developers.

Karen Samuels Jones, ’84, and her daughter, Shannon Jones, ’18, went sailing on the Voyager of the Seas cruise, touring the Aegean Sea near Syros, Greece, in September 2022.

Andrew Kneisel, ’87, took the Maize and Blue with him as he hiked to the Flatiron in Apache Junction, Arizona, in December.

Naomi Kobayashi Roy, ’13; Martha Alves, ’13, MPH’19, MSW’19; Molly Cravens, ’12; and Sarah Cravens, ’11, met while living in the Martha Cook residence hall. They reunited in Evora, Portugal, for Martha’s wedding to Tiago Salvador in June 2022. Despite living so far apart, the time they spent at U-M bonded them forever.

In June 2022, Maria Krause, MSW’94 (right), and her daughter, Elaina, traveled to Austria, Germany, France, The Netherlands, and Switzerland. The Swiss stop included a visit to the “Lion of Lucerne” monument.

Vicki and C.J. Kupec, ’75, finally made a journey to Bohemia, Czech Republic, the region of his ancestors. The couple is pictured in front of the “Dancing House” in prague. C.J. was interviewed on television about his professional basketball career and being in the Czech-Slovak basketball museum.

Kevin Mac Neil, MA’89, EdS’90, EdD’93, attended the annual Wolverines vs. Spartans football game with his son, Michael, PHARMD’10, in 2022. Hailing from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada, this was Kevin’s 31st year returning to Ann Arbor for the rivalry game.

Nan, ’68, and Bill McDaniel, ’68, took in the “Top of the World” from the Jungfraujoch landform of Switzerland.

Last year, John, ’84, and Geralyn Doskoch, MD’88 (center), revisited Sitka, Alaska, their home from 1991-95. They were joined by Geralyn’s mother, Gail Nagasako, ’65, and Jordan, Gail’s husband, who is behind the camera.

Jodi, ’85, and Kevin Neff, ’84, sent in this picture of their granddaughter, Blake, partaking in the Maize and Blue spirit. Blake’s parents are Jodi and Kevin’s son Adam Neff and his wife Melissa Neff, ’09.

“Team Riddle” celebrated the Wolverines’ victory over the Buckeyes in 2021 during a watch party in Clifton Park, New York. Jack Riddle, ’59, is on the far right, joined by “team kids” Catie and Tom.

On a November 2022 trip to Porto, Portugal, Alysa Watanabe Sakkas, ’85, and Kosta Sakkas, ’84, spotted what looked like Ann Arbor's “The Cube” sculpture just outside their hotel at Praca da Ribeira. They knew they had to take a photo.

Dave Satwicz, ’70, and Marti Camp Satwicz, ’71, visited Germany’s Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany, in September 2022.

After meeting during their freshman year at U-M, Tom Studenski, ’79, and Diane Harnica-Studenski, ’81, celebrated 40 years of marriage by visiting the Io Valley State Monument in Maui, Hawaii, with their children and grandchildren: Sindri, Alex, Isabella; siblings Matt Studenski, ’05, MSE’06 and Jackie Studenski-Parker, ’07, DPT’10; and Jordan, Jillian, and Jay.

On game day, Nov. 12, 2022, David, ’66, MBA’67, and Jean Yohe were proud to wear the colors as they visited Toledo, Spain.

Tom Young, ’97, MBA’06, has competed in dozens of triathlon races over the past six years, including California’s Malibu Triathlon in August, and he has always repped the Maize and Blue. He finished this race in the top 10 of his age group.
