Become an Alumni Student Recruiter

Join us to help encourage talented students to apply to — and ultimately attend — the University of Michigan.

As an alumni student recruiter, you provide the one-on-one interaction, personal attention, and encouragement that can make the difference between a student in your community choosing the University of Michigan or another school. Providing your perspective as a U-M alum is the most important part of the program. Alumni Student Recruitment not only brings back the nostalgia from your college days, but also helps bring the future Leaders and Best to U-M.

Goals of Alumni Student Recruitment

  • Increase the number of highly competitive and qualified students considering U-M at the undergraduate level
  • Increase the percentage of admitted students who enroll
  • Provide a local information source for inquiring students, applicants, admitted and enrolled students, and their families
  • Provide regional assistance to staff from U-M’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions

What Volunteering Entails

Alumni Student Recruitment volunteers spend the majority of their time in the winter contacting admitted students and congratulating them on their admission to U-M. You are encouraged to share your alumni story/experience to help recruit these students to enroll at U-M.

If you are asked to cover a local fall or spring college fair, we will provide you with materials. College fair participation is limited and applies only to out-of-state volunteers, as in-state college fairs are covered by U-M’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Internationally, alumni student recruiters play an important role for prospective and admitted students in their country by providing guidance on what to expect from the campus culture, helping students quickly get answers to their questions, and addressing students’ concerns about moving to and living in the United States.

All volunteers will receive a handbook, training materials, and the Alumni Student Recruitment email newsletter.

How to Get Involved

New volunteer enrollment for the 2025-26 recruiting cycle is now closed. However, you may still apply to be added to our interest list for 2026-27.

For alumni who have children going through the admissions process in the next 3 years, we ask that you to wait until that process is over before applying to the program.

Note: Many major metro areas, such as New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Detroit, have limited availability of high schools for new volunteers to adopt. We will only be able to add you to the program if we have available high schools in your area.

U-M requires background checks on all individuals who come in contact with minors involved in University programs, and this includes volunteers in the Alumni Student Recruitment program. After you apply, you will be contacted by U-M with further instructions. Background checks are provided by U-M at no cost to the alum.
