Move-in day at the University of Michigan conjures feelings of nostalgia and bittersweet memories of a late-summer day in 1993 when my single mother, close friends, and I pulled up in front of Stockwell Hall. It was raining and the elevator was broken, so imagine our enthusiasm for moving my items up to the fourth floor of the all-women’s residence hall.
I’ll never forget how helpful the Move-In Makers (now named the Michigan Welcome Team) were in getting us settled in and acclimated. These were upper-class students who had arrived on campus a few days early and volunteered to help students and families move into the residence halls.
Thousands of Wolverines carried forth this tradition as the class of 2030 arrived on campus in August. The Alumni Association was honored to be part of the welcome party, inviting students and parents into the Alumni Center for a quick breakfast as part of on-campus orientation in July and August.
This fall feels extra special because the University opened two major new developments: the student quad, Wolverine Village, and the Hadley Recreation Center. These new hubs of student activity represent important investments in the student experience on the Ann Arbor campus.
I can’t wait to tour Dr. E. Royster Harper Hall, named after the vice president emerita for student life. In addition to playing a key role in expanding and renovating U-M’s residence hall system and instituting measures that foster inclusivity and student well-being, Harper invested time and leadership lessons in me as a student and professional.
I have also come to realize that the goals of the Michigan Welcome Team extend beyond campus. While the U-M communities in Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint launch fall activities, U-M alumni clubs and affiliate groups across the globe are welcoming Wolverines who are new to their regions. Many of you may have new colleagues or neighbors who share Maize and Blue pride and will look to you for guidance on getting settled and connected. Thank you in advance for keeping an eye out for the “new” Wolverines in your network. Wherever you go, Forever Go Blue!
