Alumni Volunteer University Partners FAQ
General
Q: What is Alumni Volunteer?
A: Alumni Volunteer is a digital platform for volunteer opportunities offered through the University, from academic schools and colleges to non-academic units across campuses. It serves as a trusted source for alumni to find volunteer opportunities fit to their preferences so they can give back wherever they are, however they can.
Q: We are not a degree-granting unit. Can we still participate?
A: Yes! All University partners are eligible to join this cross-campus platform. Please contact alumni.volunteer@umich.edu to inquire of your unit’s current partnership status. You are required to complete training/system orientation before you are granted account access.
System Access
Q: We have volunteers who would like to get involved but are not technically U-M alumni. What can we do?
A: We welcome those who are passionate about finding opportunities through Alumni Volunteer. All U-M staff should follow the University’s “Friend Accounts” policy to set up appropriate accounts for these non-alumni volunteers. After completion, please notify alumni.volunteer@umich.edu to grant access to the Alumni Volunteer platform.
Volunteer Opportunities
Q: What kind of volunteer opportunities should be posted on Alumni Volunteer?
A: We value alumni volunteers’ contributions as defined by the Council for Advancement and Support for Education (CASE): “…rewarding volunteer roles that are endorsed and valued by the institution, and support its mission and strategic goals.” Examples include:
- Governing or advisory board members
- Volunteer fundraisers (note: these are volunteer positions contributing to fundraising efforts — e.g., “a regional council member” — direct solicitation should not be included on the platform)
- Officer (e.g., club leaders, treasurers)
- Activity/event hosts or organizers
- Student recruitment activities
- Career mentors
- Public advocates
- Classroom speakers
- Interviewed for an alumni profile
- Social media “takeover” volunteers
- Other volunteer roles that are rewarding and endorsed by U-M
