Are you looking for a summer internship in a cool tech office, funky arts venue, or impactful community organization? Plenty of U-M job fairs are still happening with recruiters still hiring, so polish off that resume and get to work finding work. The opportunities range from nonprofit internships in Detroit to overseas positions in data analytics and marine biology.
Don’t expect to leave with a job the day of these events, but do discuss next steps and timelines with the recruiter from any organization that interests you. Though some deadlines have passed, there is always next year, so take note of the internship programs listed and mark your calendars for the future.
Working It
Whether you want to work in the U.S., abroad, or virtually, the LSA Opportunity Hub Internship Program has a wide range of opportunities. Not only is this program exclusive to LSA students, many of the internships are hosted by LSA alumni. Summer jobs in the U.S. were posted January 2019, with an application deadline of Feb. 3, 2019. (The international deadline for internships was Dec. 1, 2018 so mark your calendar for next year.)
Benefits: Joining the Hub’s program gives you access to staff assistance with everything from the application process to finding scholarships. (LSA offers funding of up to $5,000 to support students with internships.)
Bein’ Green
Kermit the Frog had a great career being green; maybe you could, too. The 2019 U-M Green Career Fair is a campuswide environmental and sustainability event with a focus on jobs and internships. Last year, 40-plus employers and 600 graduate and undergraduate students participated. All students are welcome, though an Mcard is required for entry.
When: Tuesday, Jan. 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

A Healthy Start
More than 20 organizations are expected to attend the 2019 Health, Science, and Research Fair. If these professional areas interest you, be sure to attend. Plan on learning about the companies on the day of the fair as the names of attendees are not specifically listed on the event site. Registration is on-site the day of the fair. Don’t forget your Mcard and a $20 cash registration fee.
When: Friday, Jan. 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Have Impact
This is the career event for anyone interested in community action and social change. The LSA Social Impact Fair brings together a varied list of local and regional nonprofit organizations as well as U-M departments and programs looking for summer interns. Expected fair attendees include the Safehouse Center, Dawn Farm (a drug treatment center), the Semester in Detroit program, and the sociology department, among others. The Hub team will also be on hand to discuss funding resources and specialized programs, such as the Applebaum Internship Program in Detroit, which is designed for those interested in working for nonprofits and arts organizations in the city.
When: Monday, Jan. 28, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A Fair for All
Unsure of what type of work you might want to do this summer? Try the 2019 Winter Job & Internship Fair, which boasts more than 70 different organizations and is open to students from all U-M colleges and schools. Full-time, part-time, and volunteer positions are available. Unlike some career fairs, more than half of the organizations are interested in hiring candidates from all academic majors. Registration is on-site the day of the fair. An Mcard and $20 cash registration fee are also required for entry.
When: Tuesday, Feb. 5, from noon to 4 p.m.

A Capitol Time
This year, the Public Service Intern Program is celebrating its 50th year of placing U-M undergraduate students in Washington, D.C., internships for the summer. Opportunities include working in congressional support offices, executive agencies, judicial offices, advocacy groups, and lobbying organizations. Museums, think tanks, and media outlets also employ interns. In other words, if it happens in D.C., an organization probably has an internship in that profession.
Benefits: The application deadline is strict and early (end of September 2019) and requires an interview, but by Thanksgiving you should know if you have a D.C. internship.
