During 18 years in the California State Assembly and Senate, Hayden’s legislation toughened laws against child labor and domestic violence, required locks on handguns, and tripled tobacco taxes. He passed over 100 other measures, too, and authored 20 books and many articles. An activist and Michigan Daily editor, he co-founded Students for a Democratic Society.
