Laben, a nurse and attorney, developed a forensic mental health system to evaluate the criminal responsibility of defendants. Her reports led to the creation of the first mental health court in Tennessee. Also a professor at Boston University and Vanderbilt University, she had a lifelong commitment to the mentally ill in the criminal justice system.
