Jesmyn Ward, MFA’05

Jesmyn Ward

Growing up poor in the rural South, Ward lost five men from her hometown area, including her brother, within four years. She detailed those experiences in her memoir, “Men We Reaped,” which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. She later became the first woman to win the National Book Award twice for her novels.
