Nine Silver Slugger Awards, three Gold Gloves, the National League MVP, and a place in the Baseball Hall of Fame went to Larkin, who played 19 seasons as shortstop for the Cincinnati Reds. He also helped the team to its 1990 World Series championship. With his baseball career behind him, he returned to U-M to complete his degree.
