Jay R. Monroe, 1906, met inventor Frank Baldwin in 1911. Monroe, through his Western Electric clerk experience, saw an increasing need in the world of business for a portable, easy-to-use, accurate, and efficient calculator. Baldwin had a device that fit the bill but lacked the means to refine and market it. The two collaborated, founding Monroe Calculating Machine Co. in 1912 and going on to commercial success. Monroe also was an original organizing member of Augusta National Golf Club, contributing to the prize money for the inaugural Masters Tournament in 1934.
