U-M students who frequent Tinder, Friendsy, and other dating apps might be surprised to learn that an experiment in computer dating took place here on campus—more than 50 years ago.

In the era of room-sized computers and punch cards, Mike, ’66, and Mina Jo Linver, ’67, responded to an advertisement for the Michigan Scientific Introduction Service. The ad promised five great dates to those students who signed up.

“Get in on the fun with the new computerized dating system you’ve been hearing about,” the ad promised. All for only $3.

While Mina Jo wasn’t at the top of Mike’s list, the two met, married, and share their story in this video valentine.
