GEORGE FRAYNE, ’66, MFA’68, who died Sept. 26, 2021, donned an alias as the leader of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen when the band formed in Ann Arbor in 1967. The group earned a following with its blend of rock, country and western, blues, and jazz. Though the original band disbanded in 1976, Frayne continued producing music and touring as Commander Cody with other lineups throughout his life. He was also a prolific visual artist; though his main medium was painting, he features in the 1979 music video for “Two Triple Cheese, Side Order of Fries,” which is in the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection.
