CARRIE MEEK, MS’48, earned her bachelor’s degree from Florida A&M University (then known as Florida A&M College for Negroes) in 1946. At the time, Black students could not attend graduate school in Florida, so Meek enrolled at U-M. In 1978, Meek successfully ran for a seat in the Florida House of Representatives. In 1992, she became one of the first Black women from Florida since the Reconstruction era to earn a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. She served in that seat until 2003.
