Superconductor Phase Transitions Manage Radiative Heat Transfer

University of Michigan engineers have uncovered a new way to control heat at extremely small scales by switching a special material on and off. The team found that when niobium is cooled to a superconducting state, it can dramatically reduce the amount of heat it gives off. The work could help future quantum computers better manage heat and improve superconductor technology.
