Off-grid solar is spreading quickly in Malawi, where most people still lack access to electricity. But new research from University of Michigan scholars finds that while small solar systems improve lighting, phone charging, and financial access, only wealthier households can afford higher-capacity systems that meaningfully boost incomes. The findings suggest that expanding financing and access to larger systems will be key to making solar a true driver of economic transformation.
