Some routine preoperative tests—such as blood work, urine tests, chest x-rays, and electrocardiograms—rarely improve outcomes for patients undergoing low-risk procedures. Instead, they can cause delays, add costs, and waste resources. IHPI’s Michigan Program on Value Enhancement (MPrOVE) is helping Michigan hospitals reduce low-value pre-surgical tests while keeping essential tests. The initiative provides tailored strategies and coaching sessions to help hospital teams implement effective approaches to limit unnecessary testing before elective surgery. Now expanding to more hospitals across the state, this effort aims to optimize care, save time and money, and enhance patient safety without compromising quality.
