TikTok has surged in popularity since 2020, now used by about one-third of Americans and two-thirds of Gen Z. A growing share of users are turning to the platform for anti-establishment content that fuels distrust in institutions such as the media and healthcare. A new U-M study examines how conspiracy theory content spreads on social media, influencing public trust in government and threatening the health of democracies.
